With over four decades of combined industry experience, we are committed to developing the next generation of licensed pyrotechnicians and display fireworks operators.
If you’re interested in working in live events, fireworks, special effects, concerts, film, or large-scale celebrations, a career in pyrotechnics starts with NRCan-ERD certification.
Two Training Pathways
Capital Pyrotechnics supports two primary career and training streams:
- Pyrotechnics
- Display Fireworks
Both streams require training and certification through Natural Resources Canada – Explosives Regulatory Division (NRCan-ERD).
Pyrotechnics Course Stream
Special Effects & Close-Proximity Effects
The Pyrotechnics stream focuses on special effects used in live entertainment and productions. This includes flame effects, stage pyro, sparks, smoke, and close-proximity effects commonly seen at concerts, sporting events, theatre, and film productions.
What You’ll Learn
- Pyrotechnics safety and legal responsibilities
- Handling and use of special effects devices
- Site safety, distances, and risk management
- Setup and operation of professional effects
- Working safely around performers and audiences
Certification Outcome
- NRCan Pyrotechnician Certificate
- Ability to work professionally with special effects under Canadian regulations

Display Fireworks Course Stream
Outdoor Fireworks & Large-Scale Displays
The Display Fireworks stream focuses on outdoor fireworks displays, including municipal events, festivals, weddings, and large public celebrations.
What You’ll Learn
- Fireworks safety and legal responsibilities
- Handling, setup, and firing of display fireworks
- Mortar systems and firing technologies
- Show setup, firing procedures, and cleanup
- Site planning and spectator safety distances
Certification Outcome
- NRCan Display Fireworks Operator Certification
- Ability to work on professional fireworks displays in Canada
Ideal For

- Canada Day and holiday celebrations
How the Training Process Works
- Complete an NRCan-approved Safety & Legal Awareness Course
This is the required first step for both Pyrotechnics and Display Fireworks. - Receive a Record of Training Certificate
Issued upon successful course completion. - Apply to NRCan for Certification
Submit your training certificate through NRCan’s electronic licensing system. - Gain Field Experience
Work with licensed professionals on real events and displays.
